Chop the onions
Make 600ml of stock
Chop the beef, coat the beef in the seasoned flour
Heat a frying pan and brown the beef a little bit at a time, then add the beef to a stewing pan.
Fry the onions and bacon until the onions are soft
Add the onions, bacon, stock, cider, cayenne pepper, anchovies, thyme, celery and black treacle to the stewing pan, put a lid on it and simmer the mixture for 2 hours
30 minutes before the end of cooking prepare 225g plain flour, 100g suet, 1/2 tsp baking powder and seasoning to a bowl
Add enough cold water to the mixture to make dough balls
Add the balls to the stew. Optional extra- add carrots/pickled walnuts/any additional veg you want to add to the pot.
Mix and add water if necessary and serve after 30 minutes of cooking
