This is a 100% natural earth mineral (tetraborate). Quit passing by it in the laundry aisle. Give it some love.
Washing soda.. NOT the same as baking soda. Grease fighter and all natural (limestone and salt). No added chemicals at all. Betta' rekkognize. Stores have it. So does Amazon.
I know, I know. I went a wee bit nutso on the citric acid. But when you clean, can, and experiment as much as I do, it's worth the Jackson. ($20, not LaToya.) This is to make your dishes smell sunny.

Pick your favorite scooper. If you don't want to double dip per load, make sure it is about a TBSP or so. *Bonus points if you use the spork.
Walmart vinegar. Sorry Walmart haters. This is your rinse aid at about 2 cents a load. Whoa, your dishes will sparkle so much you'll think they proposed. (Don't accept, I heard they get around.)
This is the cost breakdown that I did. Math is hard. No seriously... This is my 4th version of this. God willing it makes sense. Heaven forbid. Find it all: http://astore.amazon.com/httpwhatdegar-20
No citric acid? Use unsweetened kool-aid lemonade in the packet!! 1/2 a pack per load when your desperate! FYI and Remember, the citric acid is optional!! Then the cost per load would be even cheaper!
